Sentence Fragments
What is missing from the sentence?
A sentence must contain at least one subject and one verb, and it must form a complete thought. A fragment is missing a subject or verb, and/or it doesn't contain a complete thought.
Sentence Fragments are also known as Incomplete Sentences, Non-Sentences, and Intentional Fragments.
She ran. It is short, sweet, and to the point. However, is it a complete sentence?
The answer is yes. Two words can make a sentence as long as it has the two essential parts: a subject and a verb. The subject is she and the verb is ran. Taa-Daa, complete sentence!
A fragment can have a capital letter. A fragment can have a period. However, it is missing one of the most important elements of a sentence. Will you see fragments in novels?
Yes (this is a fragment, by the way). However, if you see it in a book, the fragment was intentional, meaning the fragment is there for a purpose. If you are not putting a fragmented sentence in on purpose, you are making grammar mistakes!

Why do fragments seem to happen?
Students want to add sophistication and depth to their writing, but they just are not familiar with the correct way to do it. So, students will add details, but they will add details without adding them to previous sentences.
